UU Urban Ministry Pews Project

The UUUM (Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry) has been renovating the interior of the historic First Church Roxbury Meetinghouse over the past year and a half (see slide show below).  Phenomenal improvements have been made.  They are calling the last piece of their renovations the “Pews Project”, and congregations are invited to participate in this clever fundraiser. Pews will be sponsored for a $1,000 donation, which helps to restore the pews with new cushions, restored woodwork, and fresh paint, and fixing the doors of each pew box.
We would like First Parish to sponsor a pew. Our congregation will be sent a photo of “our“ pew, along with any historical information that is known about “our” pew. When the work in the Meetinghouse is completed, we will be invited to a celebration and sit in the pew we helped restore.
Many people have asked, “How can I help with justice in our community?”  Donating to the “Pews Project” is a great example.  By sponsoring this effort, you help complete a campus that gives children a safe space to go after school, a workforce development program for survivors of domestic violence, and Renewal House, a shelter for domestic violence.  The meeting house itself will be a home on the campus for the arts, humanities, and civic engagement – a much-needed venue for the sharing of these critical aspects of a community.
If you would like to donate to the Pews Project, you can donate online, or you can write a check to First Parish in Framingham with UUUM Pews Project on the memo line. Our UUUM delegates Julie Porter and Lauren Fawell will be at a table in Scott Hall during coffee hour this Sunday if you’d like to learn more about this fundraiser.  We already have a sizable anonymous donation, so we are off to a good start. We appreciate your participation!
